Why do I need this medicine?
Macrogol 3350 and 4000 help relieve constipation and maintain the regularity of bowel movement.

These medicines belong to a group of medicines called osmotic laxatives. It works by increasing water in the bowel, which makes the stools softer, so they move out of the body more easily.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Macrogol 3350 and 4000 exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

To take the powder for oral solution, empty the contents of the sachet into a glass. Add at least 100 mL of water. Stir to dissolve the powder evenly in the water, then drink the solution immediately.

The dose of Macrogol 3350 and 4000 will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Macrogol 3350 and 4000 if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to these medicines or any of its ingredients.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • ileus (a condition where the bowel does not work properly)
  • ulcerative colitis (a disease that causes inflammation and sores in the linings of the large intestine and rectum)
  • Crohn's disease (a long-term inflammatory disease of the digestive tract that usually affects the small intestine and colon)
  • toxic megacolon (widening of the large intestine caused by complications of infection or inflammation)
  • gastrointestinal perforation (a hole that develops through the walls of the digestive tract)
  • blocked bowel
  • abdominal pain of unknown cause
as Macrogol 3350 and 4000 may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • difficulty swallowing
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Macrogol 3350 and 4000 to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

Regular monitoring for signs of allergic reactions and severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain or vomiting may also be needed.

What lifestyle changes can I make to prevent constipation?

You can adopt some of the following lifestyle changes to help prevent constipation:
  • Include high-fibre foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, whole-grain cereals, and bread in your diet. Add fibre to your diet gradually to help reduce gas and bloating.
  • Drink plenty of liquids. Limit caffeine intake, which may worsen symptoms of constipation by causing dehydration.
  • Be active and exercise regularly.
  • Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.
What side effects could I experience?
Macrogol 3350 and 4000 may cause any of the following side effects: stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach wind, and a feeling of urgency to defaecate.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, throat or lips
  • pass out bloody or black as tar stools and vomiting blood or ground coffee-like material
  • severe diarrhoea and nausea, bloating, abdominal cramping or pain that worsens
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines used in organ transplants or certain immune disorders
  • medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures)
  • blood-thinning medicines
  • digoxin (medicine for heart disease)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Macrogol 3350 and 4000.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.

Drinking plenty of liquids and eating fibre-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables can help relieve constipation.

If you have difficulty swallowing, do not mix Macrogol 3350 and 4000 with starch-based food thickeners. Mixing them together may result in a watery liquid which could increase the risk of getting the mixture into your lungs.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
